# Update Audience

> Update a Microsoft Ads remarketing list or custom audience: rename it, change its membership duration, or replace its rule

Update a Microsoft Ads remarketing list or custom audience: rename it, change its membership duration, or replace its rule. Microsoft allows updates on those two types only; in-market audiences are read-only and the remaining types can be created and deleted but not edited.

| | |
| - | - |
| **App** | Microsoft Ads |
| **Operation ID** | `microsoft_ads_update_audience` |
| **Type** | Action |
| **Connection** | `microsoft_ads` (required) |
| **Credits per run** | 1 |
| **Agent / MCP tool** | Yes |
| **Requires approval** | Yes (write operation) |

## Inputs

| Field | Type | Required | Default | Description |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| `account` | object or array of object or MicrosoftAdsAccountItem or string or integer | Yes | - | Microsoft Ads account that owns the audience. |
| `audience_id` | string or integer | Yes | - | ID of the audience to update. microsoft\_ads\_list\_audiences returns these. |
| `audience_type` | enum (`RemarketingList`, `Custom`) | Yes | - | The audience's existing type, which Microsoft requires on every update. Only remarketing lists and custom audiences can be updated at all; in-market and similar audiences are read-only, and the other types can be created and deleted but not edited. |
| `name` | string | No | - | New audience name. |
| `description` | string | No | - | New description. |
| `membership_duration` | integer | No | - | How many days someone stays in the audience. 1 to 180 for a remarketing list, up to 390 for a customer list where -1 means never expire. |
| `scope` | enum (`Account`, `Customer`) | No | - | Account keeps the audience here, Customer shares it across the customer. |
| `rule` | object or string | No | - | RemarketingList only: replacement rule deciding who joins, in the same shape microsoft\_ads\_create\_audience takes. This replaces the existing rule outright, so any group to be kept has to be sent again. |

### MicrosoftAdsAccountItem

| Field | Type | Required | Default | Description |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| `value` | string | Yes | - | |
| `label` | string | Yes | - | |
| `customerId` | string | No | - | The Microsoft Ads customer ID used for REST CustomerId headers. If omitted, it is resolved from the account ID. |

## Output

**Type**: `Dict`

Returns the audience as it stands after the update.

**Fields**: `id`, `name`, `type`, `membership_duration`, `scope`
